GROWING INTO A LEADER SERIES | PART 3 By Elvis C. Umez | Leadership Consultant, IDB Consult The common attraction that many people have in following a particular pioneer leader who is believed to have the capacity to cause the needed transformation in their life is contingent upon the need to discover and fulfil purpose within a record. So, all the activities that go on in the process are geared towards ensuring that the individuals are properly equipped and deployed in their specific spheres of influence. And this entire process that begins the transformation can be sequenced into five phases characterized by certain observable indicators so that growth and development in that direction could be tracked. In the Part 2 of this series, I briefly described the four stages and how an individual could keep track of the transformation process by paying attention to certain changes that surround the needs of the leadership within time and space. However, in this Part 3, I shall focu...

GROWING INTO A LEADER SERIES | PART 2

GROWING INTO A LEADER SERIES | PART 2 By Elvis C. Umez | Leadership Consultant, IDB Consult One of the challenges many people are facing in life is associated with tracking their personal leadership growth and development to know that they are ready to begin leading themselves and then others from point A to B within a record time. Unlike the age and educational system that help us keep track of our physical and intellectual growth and development, tracking your leadership could be a little bit difficult without the help of a personal leadership strategist. However, the good thing is: I have developed some diagnostic processes that can help you track your personal leadership growth and development to the exact point of your stage and phase. As a trained Nigeria Medical Laboratory Scientist, I developed personal leadership diagnostic assays to help individuals who are desirous of getting better results in their leadership to be able to keep track of themselves as growth and devel...

GROWING INTO A LEADER SERIES | PART 1

GROWING INTO A LEADER SERIES | PART 1 By Elvis C. Umez | Leadership Consultant, IDB Consult. Growing into a leader takes time and human resources to come by, which does not happen overnight, no matter how you pray about it. Besides, it does not happen by you desiring it. But, it is a deliberate effort calibrated by growth and development in the direction of mastering life’s basic principles. It could be likened to growing into an adult, which comes with certain visible basic social sustainable attributes. While these attributes may be universal to all climes, the same could be said about growing into a leader, which is evident and associated with profound basic character development and discipline to making things work in face of challenges. Still, that you are an adult does not mean that you are a leader, automatically, rather it means that you are expected to be one. And many times, this expectation has led to some form of allusions that some people are leaders, who, in t...

HOW MUCH IS YOUR MIND WORTH? by Elvis C. Umez is ready for downloads!!! Review | Chidindu Mmadu-Okoli, Author, Be Utterly Shameless How Much is Your Mind Worth is a book that brings you face-to-face with the challenges that we have been afraid to thrash out. -joblessness, low self-esteem, unhealthy comparisons and so on. The truth is that no matter how much we try to run away from these issues that constantly arise, they will always magnify in the absence of good solution.  In this book, Elvis C. Umez brings good answers on how to live through life with a positive mentality. First he begins by opening our eyes to the fact that we have the map and compass needed to navigate through life in spite of the challenges it brings. Next, he enlightens us on the best means to address issues as higher animals created to fearlessly dominate the universe. Then he concludes by unveiling the blueprint - a paradigm shift from throwing a self-pity-party to celebrating problems as a mea...

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 87

Never make the mistake of thinking that because you have a great vision and good intentions that the people you are leading will just follow you. Having great vision is one thing and having people to follow you is another things altogether. Until the people understand the vision and are clear with your intentions for doing all that you do, it will appear you are a one man squad. Pioneer Leaders die in isolation because they fail to make the vision plain enough for proper understanding of what it will take to actualize it. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 85

Every pioneer leader is on the hunt seeking to discover new things. You cannot stop hunting until you have captured the change culture in your leadership. While hunting, learn why something is working when it is working so you can fix it when it breaks down. This will enable you to promptly fix problems no matter what they are within a record time. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 86

The Pioneer Leader is always doing one thing or the other that requires a movement from point A to B with the hope of achieving something worthwhile within a record time and how often he succeeds in those depends on how good he is in his engagement with others. Your dexterity in working with people after having grasped the dynamics of the processes of leadership is what eventually determines and delivers what results you will get. You can never work alone. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 84

Never criticize something that you do not understand. Even though it is true that we naturally resist things that we do not immediately understand and cannot control. However, the moment you start criticizing, the more you stop learning. The moment you stop learning as a pioneer leader, your influence over your followers will begin to drop gradually. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 83

The greatest danger with not being in charge is the passivity that wants to settle upon you. I have noticed this in my own life and leadership. When I am not in charge, the danger is to feel out of control.  When you feel out of control, you become passive. In order to cultivate influence without authority, as the Pioneer Leader, you need to reject the passivity that is so contagious in the roles you are in. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

THE ACTION DIMENSION OF LEADERSHIP

“Faith without works is dead.” -James. The two profound statements that you need to pay attention to, from the previous two essays, are: 1. You are always a thought away from winning and achieving your leadership dreams and 2. Your leadership will eventually become your consistent spoken words. Beyond the thoughts and words dimension of creating what you choose in your leadership, as the pioneer leader, there is the third, the Action Dimension. Your actions must be consistent with your thoughts and words such that they deliver hope to the people. The creating process requires that after you have thought about the possibilities within your reach, you must speak them to pass, and then begin to do the things that accompany the preceding thoughts and words. For every thought, there is a corresponding word: and for every word, a corresponding action. I find it very interesting reading through the Ancient Book on the accounts of faith and works. And this is what I found out acc...

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 82

Choosing positivity alone will not cultivate influence with those around you. However, a positive attitude coupled with the skill of thinking critically is a powerful combination. Critical thinkers bring value to whatever position and situation they are in. The danger, though, with critical thinking is that it turns into a critical spirit. The line between critical thinking and a critical spirit is razor thin. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

THE THOUGHT DIMENSION OF LEADERSHIP

“Man is not what he thinks he is – but what he thinks, he is.” -Elbert Hubbard The process of creation of any form of reality begins, first, as a thought. Architects understand this very well that every building begins as a thought. Here is the deal, If you can think it, you can achieve. The same is true in leadership. As a pioneer leader, your constant thoughts will eventually become your reality, which shapes the environment for the entire leadership team to play their games. Furthermore, the reality of your leadership is contingent upon your consistent thought pattern, which is transferrable to the people you are leading in such a way that if you think anything is possible, they will think so, and if you think otherwise, they will too. Reading the Ancient Book, I saw a story that best fits this paradigm. The story had it that a king was faced with a giant, and instead of confronting this giant, he rather thought it was impossible for him, and consequently, his en...

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 81

One of your greatest responsibilities as a Pioneer Leader, whether you have influence or not, is to choose positivity about the situation you’ve been handed. No one has more control over your attitude more today than you do. And as you choose a hope-filled, forward thinking, can-do attitude, you can cultivate more influence than you ever thought you could. But it begins with choosing positivity, no matter what the situation is. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 80

The environmental condition that ensures effective transformation of the followers is created by the Pioneer Leader's consistent thoughts, words and actions, which could be expressed either on the positive or negative. Pioneer leaders should understand that they are not different from their consistent thoughts, words and actions. If anything will go wrong it is because they thought about, spoke about and acted about it. As the pioneer leader, you must should be careful of what you think, say and do. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 79

Love is the more excellent way that ensures transformation of the people from followers into great leaders. And while the pioneer may consider continuity, he should not be bothered much because love got that sorted out. The resultant effect of raising the people you are given to lead in love is continuity because they will never forget that you raised them, and would inadvertently continue in the expansion of your leadership vision and purpose. Who are you raising in your leadership? Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development IDB Consult

LOVE: THE CATALYST FOR TRANSFORMATION IN LEADERSHIP 4

Change   and transformation is guaranteed when the pioneer leader chooses to respond to the followers from the point of love by touching their hearts not just their heads. Just like I had said in the previous essays that real change and transformation happens when the hearts of the followers are being influenced in helping them become their ideal selves, the pioneer leader must make the transformation of his followers his ultimate goal. The description of love by Paul continues, thus: Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others: Being a follower is like being a child, who by virtue of lack of experience, is bound to make mistakes. It is expected of the pioneer to ignore these mistakes as they are intended to help the followers discover what they are capable of doing. While some of these mistakes could expensive, the pioneer should not keep score of them.  Keeping score of them will inhibit the transformation process and the entire outcome of the results intended to be ach...

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 78

Real change and transformation occurs in the lives of the followers when their hearts are being influenced in the direction that helps them come to terms with who they are, which the pioneer can only achieve by anchoring every of his actions in love. When the followers are transformed into their ideal selves, they take the leadership vision and purpose to the next level.   The pioneer leader should understand that his  greatest contribution  is the people he is able to raise. LOVE: THE CATALYST FOR TRANSFORMATION IN LEADERSHIP 3

Now that Valentine's Day is over, so what is next? You see, if we have to show love to the people dear to our hearts once a year, then that love cannot be pure. Leadership requires a constant  show of love, day in, day out, and that, we must seek to always do if we intend to transform the people from being followers to leaders within time and space. In the previous essay, I started explaining Paul's descriptions of love, which I will continue in today's, too. Paul continues, thus: Love doesn’t strut: To strut means to walk in arrogant way: to walk in a stiff or proud way that suggests arrogance or pomposity. As a leader, you are not different from the people following you. However, the only difference there is to be considered is that you know the way and are willing to show it to them within time and space, nothing more or less. No good shepherd will be proud before the sheep, because that does not just make sense. Being the pioneer leader is like being the good shepher...

LOVE: THE CATALYST FOR TRANSFORMATION IN LEADERSHIP 2

Love is in the air! So many people appear to be doing one thing or the other in a bid to express their love to someone they love. But how often do we take time to exude this level excitement in showing love to the people that work for and/with us in our organizations? Just think about it. In the just previous essay, I cited the descriptive words of Paul about love in relation to leadership, which I shall begin today to explain briefly, and also point out how they are related to what you do in leadership. According to Paul: Love never gives up: Really? How about the concept of hire to fire? I find it interesting to observe that most leaders who hire and fire their workers for doing poor jobs have not thought about disowning their children for scoring an "F" in one of their subjects. Why is that so? Love never gives up. If the employee does a poor job, it is not his or her faults, rather it is the fault of the system that hired him or her. When leaders of organizations fail ...

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 77

Love is the universal languague that everybody understands and would never resent, because it touches the core of our being to respond to everything in the way and manner we should within time and space. The pioneer leader, in choosing the path of love, has access to infinite possibilities in transforming the people from followers to leaders. And when he has that access, nothing can stop him in moving from point A to B within a record time. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 76

Save yourself the long pep talk in a bid to motivate and inspire your followers. Nothing will inspire and motivate them to act without a word from you like the singular act of love. Here are the three things you must always do to your followers: 1. Love them. 2. Just love them. 3. Keep loving them some more. Pep talk touches the head while love touches the heart. I guess you know the difference. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 75

You can never fail in leadership when you genuinely love your followers the way you love yourself. Think of it as doing to your followers the exact same thing you would do to yourself. Whatever you wish to do for yourself as the Pioneer Leader, also wish you could do the same for your followers. Because, If there is any language the followers understand easily, it is the language of love. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LOVE: THE PRIME FACTOR OF LEADERSHIP

Do you know that leadership is a love affair in all ramifications? Do you also know that it is impossible to lead a people with the goal of causing a lasting change without love being the first point of reference? However, this week is a week of love emphasis for a lot of people and many are going to go really crazy all in the name of love and I expect that beyond showing love to people just in the name of Valentine's Day, it is important to turn to your leadership to see how you can celebrate love there. Because without love, it is impossible to have your leadership intact. The question of love, in leadership, is non-negotiable such that it is the bedrock of every society and serves as the core of its operating system. Think of it that nations fight against themselves because of the love they have for their citizens. Leaders of organizations hire and fire their employees for the greater they have for what the organizations stand for. Parents discipline their children because of t...

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 74

Without love it is impossible for the Pioneer Leader to transform the followers into leaders. You must come to the realization that you can only change the people you lead when you love them deeply. And that is where a lot of leaders miss it. Beyond issuing commands, do you know that there is this part of your followers that responds to just love from you? That is why it is true that love never fails. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 73

Pioneer Leaders should be careful to note that Corrective  Opposition is borne out a clear sense of wanting something better for their leadership such that it resents any policy or decisions that appear to drag the organization down. Additionally, the person(s) opposing must have been known to having a pedigree for opposing ideas based on their design. What this means is that there are individuals who are naturally disposed to critique every decision  for the good of the entire organization. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

DISCIPLINING YOUR DISAPPOINTMENTS IN LEADERSHIP

I have seen pioneer leaders who quit because they felt disappointed, in that their efforts did not yield the a commensurate results from their estimation but they forget to recognition that it is not every seed planted to the ground that germinates. Pioneer leaders must additionally discipline their disappointments in such a way that it gives them the benefit of doubt not to throw in the towel when things go wrong. The guarantee of harvest after planting your seed depends on nature while you still deserve it. I have seen farmers who lost all their crops to erosion, flood, earthquake, pest infestation, even herds men, but they never stopped planting. Those occurrences are not totally within the farmers' control, nonetheless they still have a choice to be disappointed or not. In leadership, many times, your efforts as the pioneer leader will not yield increase, such that people will get offended and leave the leadership cycle unexpectedly, which sometimes, also, has left many leader...

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 72

Every form of opposition is a function of criticism on the part of the individuals who are primarily dissatisfied with the leadership. The Pioneer Leader should understand that the spring board of every opposition is dissatisfaction, misunderstanding and fear of loss of control. In understanding those key elements causing the opposition, the pioneer leader should categorize them into: 1. Corrective and 2. Destructive. His ability to do this will save him from the problem of "much ado about nothing." Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

THE LEADER AND TIME MANAGEMENT 3

Many of the problems faced in leadership is associated with missing the rhythm of the timing in getting things done when they ought to be done, which is the primary determinant of every result gotten. It is one thing to carry out a task, yet, another thing to do it in time. Understanding the rhythm and living your life within that spectrum of thought is something  every pioneer leader must aspire to do, else he or she will be left behind in time, and will suddenly become obsolete. Until your time is managed properly, you can never be sure of the results. In developing the attitude for time management, there are four things you do, and they are: 1. You must desire to manage your time very well. You cannot begin or have  a thing unless you first of all desire to have that thing. While that is true for everything other aspect of your life,  desiring to manage you time must begin with the thought process that affords you luxury that your thoughts are possible. 2. Mak...

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 71

Looking at nature, you will discover everything is under opposition -- the force of gravity, yet plants, animals, even humans still grow against it. They do not grumble or complain about and that is worthy of note for every Pioneer Leader. They cannot do without it, else they fall into the space of nothingness. In leadership, any attempt to eradicate opposition through censorship will throw the organization into the zone of nothingness. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

THE LEADER AND TIME MANAGEMENT 2

Everything in life is designed to follow a rhythm, which nature never fails to follow. This is same in leadership, in order for the leader to get the desired results he or she must never fail to follow this rhythm.  I have observed that the greatest enemy of time is procrastination, that is, putting off for tomorrow something that should have been done today and thinking that all is well. Another enemy is hesitation, that is, failing to do what ought to be done when it ought to be done. As a leader, you should understand that there is time for everything, which places a demand on you to carry out your responsibilities within time and space transforming the people from followers to leaders in the actualization of the leadership purpose. There are a few possible steps you can always take that ensures effective time managemen in dealing with tasks, which include the following: 1. Salami slicing: this refers to a series of many small actions, often performed by c...

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 70

Opposition in any form of leadership is like the force of gravity that pulls everything to  center of the earth. And where it is absent, the entire system is thrown into nothingness. Pioneer Leaders who understand the importance of opposition, go to the extent  of engineering one where none exists, because it is what helps them to hold every outcome of the leadership together and to the centre. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

TIME MANAGEMENT AND THE LEADER

In my few years of working and theorizing about leadership, I came to the conclusion of who a leader is, which has a lot to do with time. A leader is one who knows what to do, when to do it, why to do it and how to do it in moving himself and others from point A to B within a record time having achieved the leadership purpose. That is to say that the lead understands the dynamics of events happening within time and space and positions himself to seize the moment. The fundamental truth you must be aware of is that everything is seeded in time. That is to say, if you will achieve anything at all in leadership, it must be done within time and space. And time, significantly, is the space between thoughts, actions and deeds. Time management is one of the things that has flawed man in history because he is yet to understand clearly what it is, really. Every challenge you face had something to do with the management of time, and the difference between where you are now, the place you had be...

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 69

Mature Pioneer Leaders always look forward to opposition, because they use it to create contrast. Mature, here, implies that they know what to do, when to do it, why to do it and why to do it within time and space. It appears that every immature pioneer leader resents opposition, which could be due to their inability to provide superior reasoning for a logical conclusion and not knowing what to do when they do not know what to do. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

DESERVING RESULTS IN LEADERSHIP

Life doesn't respond to you because you need a thing, it responds because you deserve it. Deserving means that you have come to the knowledge, wisdom and understanding of the dynamics of how the things you seek work. Getting results in leadership does not happen because you are dare need of them, rather results happen because you know what to do, when to do it, why to do it and how to do it. Every leader must seek to figure out in a clear and concise manner how to get the intended results in leadership, because those who harvest in the dry season are those who sowed in the rainy season. They are the ones that deserve the harvest. The earth does not give food because you are hungry, rather it gives you food because you sowed a seed. Also, having seed in your hands does not guarantee harvest, rather sowing the seeds into the ground will ensure that you get what you deserve. It is true that every entrepreneur needs to make profits, but the truth is not everyone of them who set out...

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 68

In leadership, the Pioneer Leader cannot not lead with opposition, because it is the life wire of every leadership. One of the lies that has been told for a long time, especially public leadership, is that it is bad or wrong to oppose leadership. The truth is that intelligent followers will not adapt and/or accept what the leadership brings in every given time. It would be very ridiculous to think otherwise because the pioneer leader can never measure how well he is doing in leadership until he encounters opposition. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 67

The thinking that leadership is all about being the Pioneer Leader and by virtue of that others must follow is rather an erroneous thought pattern. The opposite of a leader is not a follower, because every follower is a potential leader who needs to be transformed. Modern leadership suggests that the leader is there to lead and the followers, there to follow even when the leader does not make sense while postmodern leadership is focused on the leading and following process that ensures the transformation of those being led into pioneer leaders. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

ADD AN ADJECTIVE TO YOUR LEADERSHIP

The difference between two people rendering the same service in any form of leadership is just an added value that is being neglected, but recognized by one. When everybody is doing the same thing, there is need to just make it a little bit difference from what used to be. Your relevance as a leader is to the degree that you are able to add value to your leadership in order to make it uniquely different from what is obtainable anywhere else. There is a great difference between a Medical Scientist and a diligent Medical Scientist because diligence alone makes the difference. Also, there is a great difference between a doctor and a compassionate doctor. Being a doctor or a Medical Scientist is not just enough, but being a compassionate doctor and diligent Scientist will just do the magic to the patient. Furthermore, there is a great difference between a speaker and an inspiring speaker. Dishing out inspiration works the magic in the art of speaking. It is not just enough to be a lead...

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 66

There comes a time in leadership that the Pioneer Leader is not the one bringing the paradigm shifting ideas that reposition the organization. And that is one thing every leader leading a group of people must always bear in mind. In modern leadership, the leader is the champion while in Postmodern Leadership, everyone is a Champion. It is left for the pioneer leader to leverage on that in order to have a quantum leap in his journey. Are you still bent on that fact that your ideas must prevail? Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 65

It is often the case that Pioneer Leaders who were raised in the modern era find postmodern leadership concept a crazy idea because they believe they are going to lose relevance and that it shifts attention from themselves to the followers. This is because in modern leadership followers are seen as tools to be used and thrown away while postmodern leadership is focused on transforming followers into change agents with the proclivity of even driving the leadership cycle in the absence of the pioneer leader. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 64

As leadership continues to evolve, Pioneer Leaders must recognize that things ought to be done differently in order for him to leverage on the abilities of the people he is leading, such that problem solving requires his ingenuity and those of the people put together. Although, modern leadership mainly focuses of the ingenuity of the leader, postmodern leadership focuses on the Collective Ingenuity of the players of the cycle of leadership. For effective leadership, the pioneer leader must not be the only cock crowing. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 63

In understanding the shift from modern leadership to postmodern leadership, the Pioneer Leader must always shift focus from himself to the people he is leading because they hold the key to the transition into the new phase that ensures a safe landing within a record time. While modern leadership focuses only on the actualisation of the vision of the Pioneer Leader, in postmodern leadership, the actualisation of the visions of the followers culminates in the actualisation of the vision of the leader. He becomes the midwife that helps the followers give birth to their visions. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 62

A world of one man leadership that we have come to know as leaders is, indeed, passing away; some kind of a new one is being born. This change is described as a shift from modern to postmodern leadership, which the Pioneer Leader must seek to understand. Modern leadership lays emphasis on the leaders' vision, attitude, plans, goals, etc. while postmodern leadership lays emphasis on the followers' vision, attitude, plans, goals, etc. It is important for the Pioneer Leader to align himself along these shifts. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 61

Gaining new perspective, which is contingent upon growth, development and awareness on the part of the players of the leadership cycle must be fine tuned by Pioneer Leader in order to curtail the adverse effect on the entire leadership team due to lack of precision and clarity. These adverse effects can be likened to using the coarse adjust knob in viewing an image on the stage without engaging the fine adjustment knob for precision and clarity under a microscope. The Pioneer Leader should always be ready to provide assistance on how to do this fine-tuning for precision and clarity. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 60

Growth and development affords the players of the leadership cycle new perspectives, which is a sign that the Pioneer Leader is causing tangible transformation on the them. The Pioneer Leader, on observing these changes, should be able to modulate his feed action responses to accommodate them. When he fails to do so, there will be clash of interest, which if not managed well would lead to divisiveness and disrespect. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 59

Possiblity thinking Pioneer Leaders must strike a balance between exploration and exploitation because too much of each of them independent of the other could make the entire leadership go into extinction. The balance should be such that exploration would lead to exploitation and vice versa. Exploration must be such that its indices are of immediate consequence so that the leadership is not lost in the future. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 58

There are two elements of possiblity thinking that the Pioneer Leader must engage when faced problems, which could hinder him and the players of the leadership cycle from arriving at the destination within a record time. They are exploration and exploitation. Exploration opens you up to see all the available opportunities you could choose from in order to solve the impending problems while exploitation opens you up to take advantage and exhaust each of those opportunities, one step at a time. Are you exploring or exploiting? Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 57

The contraption, IMPOSSIBLE, in any form of leadership, is characterized by the Pioneer Leader's decision to not seek the "know-how" of how to solve a problem, which can also be transferred to the followers. Here is the advice to the follower led by an impossibility thinking leader: do not let the disposition of the Pioneer Leader to not seek the "know-how" of a problem stop you from thinking possiblity. You have an infinite capacity to figure anything out. Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS 56

Problems are designed to be solved and they exist because there are solutions. There are no problem without corresponding solutions within time and space. Not knowing "how" to solve a problem is one thing, and thinking that it is impossible is another thing. Every Pioneer Leader who solves some fundamental problems, thinks possibilities. Are you a possibility thinking leader? Elvis C. Umez Leadership Consultant School of Leadership Development (SOLD) IDB Consult

LEADING IN A CHANGING WORLD | DISEMBEDDING

Previously on leading in a changing world, I started discussing the five basic phases that any leadership encounters change and the roles the pioneer leader is expected to play in order to have a safe landing within a record time. I looked at the first two, which are STABILITY and DISCONTINUITY. But in today’s essay, I am going to consider the third phase. At this phase, stability is all but gone. The power of the tradition, so crucial in earlier phases, no longer has the ability to act like glue holding the system in the place where it has been for a long time. Both internal and external pressures become too great for merely maintenance and management of what-has-been. The systems, and the people in it, are now experiencing increasing levels of distress as they try to manage the challenges from within the frameworks of stability and tradition. Stress is everywhere. Relationships are strained. Systems begin breaking down. Power struggles emerge. Conflict and blaming are common. ...
